Fwd: Your presentation is going bad ... panic briefly then do this to recover

Remember your last difficult and painful client call?

It happens to me too.

On Saturday, I was minding my own business when my speaking agent called, "Hey Oren, you need to be in London on Monday."

uhhh, you mean the London Hotel in Los Angeles?

No, she said, "London, London. You're going to England. It's 2,000 people, the other speaker backed out and I booked you. You. Are. Going."

No brainer, right?

Just jump on a plane, travel to the other side of the world, with jet lag and under high-pressure, give an amazing performance to 2,000 people who were obviously expecting a different (and better) performer.

What a second. I wondered out loud... why not to do the presentation by skype?

I proposed to the client: cut my fee in HALF if I can do it by skype straight to your Jumbotron.

The client loved the idea.

We signed the deal and I started thinking ...

What could possibly go wrong here??

All I have to do to collect a payday is:

- broadcast to a huge Dallas Cowboys-sized jumbotron 11,000 miles away
- using a $900 Canon camera in a warehouse in California
- operated by an intern named "Peter" who I have known for 3-weeks
- while I deliver american-style jokes to European aristocrats

So how did I do?

Here's the politically correct answer: Oh, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to present on the world stage to one of the world's greatest companies.

Here's the truth: Farvegneugnan! My laptop froze 11 seconds into the presentation. It locked up on my test slide. I could see the audience looking at me on the Jumbotron, confused, and they definitely did not look "entertained" which is not good because I get paid to do one job: "entertain."

Look, I'm not completely crazy: I know things go wrong and always prepare and practice backup content eg. a 4-minute long killer joke for such emergency situations.

Always have a 5-minute prepared "piece" that you know cold. This will give your tech people a chance to fix the problem and reduce your panic attack.

The joke I use in these situations is terrific and has a moral-to-the-story, but It's too long to print here,so just imagine something like this, below, a short story that highlights the true nature of man...
A guy asks his neighbor in an apartment building: "Hey, you live directly above me and you have the same 2-room apartment as I do. How many rolls of wallpaper did you buy when you moved in?"

"We got 18 rolls," answers the neighbor.

A week later the guy meets his neighbor again and says, "It's really strange – I put the wallpaper on everywhere and I still had 10 rolls left over."

Neighbor smiles, "Yeah, so did we."
Ha! People can be so inconsiderate, in fact, when there is no immediate benefit to us, we can be thoughtless and careless to others.

As I dropped the punchline, did the audience break out in laughter?

NO. Instead, they stared at the Jumbotron like I was reading them page 97 of the Senate healthcare bill.

Really? Out of 2,000 people, not a single one thought my joke was worth a half smile?

With no slides to show, and no-love from the audience, this was looking grim. I had a mild panic attack, which lasted only briefly, because ...

5-seconds later, the audience exploded in laughter.

The video feed delay had finally caught up to the punchline!

roaring laughter!

This gave me a chance to do two things: 1. Shift to my memorized back-up material, and 2. Adjust to the video-delay. Eventually, someone in tech got the slides working (the tech guys always come through if you give them a few minutes). The adrenaline rush of almost failing forced me to give one hell of a presentation.

Where's the lesson in all this?

It doesn't matter if you're broadcasting to an I-Max screen or a 2" Samsung watch, anyone who makes presentations for a living knows, video audiences only want four things from you:

1. New and useful business information
2. A narrative format
3. 5-simple slides
4. Solid Jokes

that's it.

So here's a question: If you're getting thrown onto video calls and into live presentations, are you fully prepared?

Your next call has started, and let's assume:

- there's a problem with audio & tech
- time is cut short
- your partner joins late, calling from his loud car so you have to mute him
- the client didn't read your briefing
- the slides are in the wrong order

Only one thing can make this right.

A great narrative presentation. No slides. No outside help.

Just you, explaining why your product and your company is the best.

Maybe you already have a great presentation. I'd love to see it and find out.

And if your current presentation is "ok" but not great, consider joining me on July 28th to do three things.
1. Show myself and a team of professionals what your current pitch looks like

2. We will poke holes in it, shine a light on the flaws, errors and weak-spots

3. Then we will fix, upgrade and make it an enterprise-quality world-class presentation.
If you want to have the best pitch in your industry, apply here.

Fwd: [Life Hack #47] Nobody’s got it all figured out...

When you're looking for folks to trust...

It's always good to remember this very salient point: Nobody's got life or biz entirely "figured out".

And yet, we often seem to crave to find — or be — the type of person who appears to have done it.

It's a major kink in our human operating system (which comes with no manual, by the way)…

... that allows us to believe (for brief periods) that we got this existence thang nailed.

Then reality intrudes (and yes, the universe does have a very twisted sense of humor)…

... and you realize that what you thought was competence…

... was really just the product of hiding from your consciousness all the uncomfortable crap you hate dealing with.

We're all juggling a whacky mess of emotional, intellectual, physical and metaphysical balls every moment we breathe…

... and it's worth remembering…

… that nobody's got it all figured out. We all drop balls, all the time.

It's baked into life.

If you crave leadership, look for reluctant leaders — those few who simply make themselves available.

The loud-mouthed ones elbowing their way onto your radar, bragging up a storm, must be viewed with cautious alarm. Avoid them at all costs.

The mentors you want are the dudes or dudettes who've been around the block a few times, know the game well, and have succeeded at it. Not with smoke and mirrors, but with reputation and hard work and a commitment to doing the right thing at all times. (Rare.)

Life would be easier if everyone was who they insist they are.

Don't buy into that myth. You'll get burned time and time again.

Just a word to the wise.

Hope you're enjoying the first days of real summer...

Stay frosty,

John

P.S. For a great (and super cheap) (couple of bucks) digital summer read...

… try this.

It'll entertain you (we're talking about LOL moments of sheer joy), boost your hipness quotient significantly, and lay out the most important rules of the game (if you want to win big).

You can read it in an evening. And start putting it to work the next morning...

Fwd: Gone Forever

The Gary Halbert Letter

Pic of Gary

Gone forever...

Kevin here,

Three of these four legends have died in the last ten years.

One thing is for sure... it is impossible for you to see them anywhere all together like this... ever again... and all at the top of their game.

Gary Halbert... John Carlton... Scott Haines and Joachim de Posada came together and made history... holding a 2 1/2 day seminar... revealing some of the most jealously guarded marketing secrets ever shared.

This was a "no-holds-barred, let is all hang out, tell-all seminar!" that ended in a roaring standing ovation!

I going to tell you all about this amazing once in a lifetime seminar in a minute but there is something I need to ask your first.

And just to be honest... It is a trick question... if you are a novice you are most likely to get it wrong. But if you are a savvy marketer you'll get it right away.

Here's it is...

Question: How much more effective does your advertising need to be in order for you to double your profits?

If you answered that your advertising needs to be 100% more effective to double your profits...

YOU ARE DEAD WRONG!

With any kind of average converting copy a 10 or 15% bump in conversion could mean doubling or tripling your profits easily.

That is why savvy marketers are searching for any kind of edge in their copy to jump up there bottom line and edge out their competition.

Now I want you to do me a favor. I want you to check out some of the bullets from this seminar that are listed below.

I want you to ask yourself how much more successful and how much more money you would make if you took advantage of just half the insider information revealed in this seminar.

Yes... I'm asking you... if even only half of these secrets that are relevant to you business were used... how much more money would you make?

Would you double your profits? Would you triple them?

Next I want you to ask yourself. If you knew for sure by using this amazing information you would double your profits guaranteed, how much would it be worth to you?

Let's check out these bullets and also then the closing copy written by none other than Scott Haines... one of the three "Dead Legends" staring in this seminar.

In this seminar you'll discover:

-- The real secrets for making insane amounts of money in direct marketing! (Only a handful of "gurus" even know this secret… let alone, teach it!)

-- How to write the most effective advertising copy possible.

-- A simple "at home" exercise you can do to cheat your way to writing better copy, faster! (This one secret alone could increase your copywriting ability by 500% to 1000% or more in the next 6 to 12 months!)

-- The "missing link" in most advertising… or… why most copy fails! (If you aren't straight about this little-known ingredient, you might as well retire your pen right now and go get a job!)

-- 6 Challenges we face right now that stand in the way of achieving massive, lasting success… and how to overcome them! (First, you must know what these challenges are… and then… and only then, can you deal with them effectively!)

-- The most bottom-line impactful sales lesson you could ever learn! (Joachim —when he worked for Xerox — was given an unlimited budget [up to $1 Million] to discover exactly why people buy! Using hidden cameras and other clandestine spy methods… here's the great discovery he made!)

-- The 3 and only 3 ways to increase your business or productivity in your business! Work on these 3 at the same time and you'll literally…

-- Secret Power Words that carry an emotional "back kick" and send results through the roof!

-- How to test the "appeal to the reader" factor of all your advertising before you ever spend a dime running it! (Now, know instantly if what you've written is going to strike a chord with your target audience…or… bore them to tears!)

-- How to reduce refunds to a bare minimum! (This secret technique goes against every grain of instinct you possess… yet it's factual and vitally potent for helping you keep more of the money you deserve!)

-- How to get an instant 30% bump in response every time…just by changing one word in your sales letter!

-- The most successful single word you can use in your ads and sales letters! (It's not "you" or "free"… although those words are good. No, this word is far more powerful and effective… and… it literally forces people to buy now!)

-- How to hit the passionate "sweet spot" of your reader and literally compel him to buy immediately… even if… he has to spend his last dime to do so!

-- How to instantly "goose" the raw effectiveness of your advertising copy right now!

-- A secret, yet crucial thing you must do in every advertisement you write! (Amazingly, even pros forget to do this sometimes.)

-- How to find the killer "hook" or human-interest tidbit you need to write a great headline! (Most headlines are wimpy and weak and the results reveal that. Here's how to infuse some street-savvy, sales appeal into your headlines for maximum response!)

If you are in business in any way… or you are a direct response copywriter… or thinking about becoming one… you cannot afford to be left out on this top-secret, insider information…

This Information Is Mandatory!

However, you missed the chance to hear it "live". But there's still hope! Gary had a professional video and audio crew tape the entire seminar. Every single minute. Not one secret left out!

And that's good news for you. You see, having streaming online access to the seminar recordings is often even better than attending live! Here's why: At a live seminar, you often miss 40% to 60% or more of what is being said. However, when you have the online reocording… you can watch them instantly and review them over and over… and… take meticulous notes. With the recordings, you won't miss anything!

That's extremely important. Dan Kennedy, in his December 2002, No B.S. Marketing Newsletter harps on about the importance of stray ideas. He says, that even one single "stray" idea you get from a seminar can often make you a fortune. And he credits just one "stray" idea/comment Gary made (at one of his early 1990s Key West seminars) as an idea that has made him millions of dollars over the years!

And you know what? This copywriting seminar was chock-full of stray comments and ideas… any one of which could make you millions. And… will make some of the people who attended millions. You can join this crowd by getting instant online access and looking for your one "stray" idea.

Anyway, that's not all the good news… if you get in on this offer before midnight tonight you'll get…

60% Off What The Attendees Had To Pay!

You'll get the entire seminar, every minute recorded on video. So you can watch at home or on your phone. And, you'll get all this for — not the $2,450 the primary attendees had to pay to learn it… but 1/2 off, just…

$997

That's an even $997. Does that still seem like a lot of money to you? If so, consider these facts:

Gary almost always charged the full seminar attendance price for the tapes! (He very seldom makes 1/2 off deals.)

Robert Allen — publicly, on television — said that one idea he got from Gary at a seminar made him an extra $75 million!

Dr. Gerald McCarthy went to one of Gary's early 1990s seminars and Gary gave him just one idea. And, in the next 12 months, Dr. McCarthy made a documented $7,137,281.00 he would not have made otherwise had he not attended the seminar! (And, believe it or not, Dr. McCarthy attended one of Gary's seminars almost a decade later… and… starting from scratch… with just one idea he got from Gary… made another windfall of nearly $6 Million in 15 months!)

Dozens and dozens of others have had $1 Million plus increases after attending a Gary Halbert seminar!

Hundreds — probably thousands — of others have had more modest increases of $10,000, $50,000, $100,000 up to $1,000,000 after attending. (In any case, a Gary Halbert seminar never costs you anything… it pays you to go [or to get the tapes]… unless… you do nothing with the secrets he reveals.)

You'll learn — really learn from a true master — the most valuable skill in the world! You can get anything you want in life with these advanced, insider copywriting skills. Money, Fame, Love, Success, Out of Trouble, etc.

It's probably less than you'd pay for a semester of courses at your local university… which… gives you back exactly zero, zilch, nada in the life skills/money-making department!

Truly, it doesn't get any better than this. You get the world's greatest advertising copy secrets at your disposal.

Sincerely, Scott L. Haines

P.S. This testimonial just came in the other day:"Gary, you might be interested in the results of a sales letter I wrote AFTER attending your copywriting seminar. Since it was mailed on Jan 6th (4 days ago), it has increased sales for my client by 312%! And personally, as I compare it side-by-side with the sales letter that I wrote BEFORE I left, I think this letter's success is largely due to some "key" distinctions I picked up at the seminar. So… a very worthwhile trip from down under!" — Brett McFall, Sydney, Australia

(What's interesting to note: Brett is an experienced copywriter… not a NOVICE. In fact, over the last 14 years or so, he has written over 7,800 money-making ads and sales letters in 153 different industries. Not just any ads. But ads that MAKE MONEY! And he still picked up response producing distinctions/secrets at Gary's seminar. PLUS… imagine the money Brett had to spend to get to Phoenix, Arizona from Sydney, Australia — not to mention the inconvenience. Brett had to pay $2,450 U.S. plus hotel and other expenses.

And last time I checked, $1 U.S. was equal to approximately $2 Australian. Meaning: it cost him well over $5,000! You'll spend next to nothing compared to Brett for the exact same top-secret info… delivered right to your front door. You can then "own" these super-profitable secrets… and… realize a lifetime of extraordinary success. Give the recordings a try and see if you can't more than triple your own sales or those of your clients. Order Now!)

Well...that's it

Three of these legends are gone forever... but they will be forever immortalized in these history making recordings

What would you do just to discover a handful of their secrets?

How much more effective would your copy be if Gary or Scott tweaked it for you using just a tiny fraction of the marketing wisdom revealed in this epic event.

How much could just one insider tip from this seminar change your life?

What if you applied ALL these techniques revealed in these recordings to your copywriting and marketing.

How much would it be worth to your buisness to increase conversion by just 10 or 15%?

Would it be worth $10,000 or $20,000 to increase your conversion by just 5%... let alone the discounted $997(available for only a few more hours at this price!)?

How long would it take you to learn these secrets on your own?

Not sure if this is the life changing offer is right for your situation... what do you have to lose?

This seminar comes with a 100% money back no questions asked guarantee

Get in on this now introductory offer now...  before we raise the price at midnight.

Self-Steering Volvo Truck Set to Increase Brazil's Sugarcane Harvest

3d printed ovaries

What it is: Volvo Trucks has developed a new self-steering truck used to transport newly harvested sugarcane. Current harvesting trucks often trample the young plants that will become the next year's harvest in the collection process. Guided by GPS receivers and fitted with two gyroscopes to ensure precise steering (to within 25 mm laterally from its course), Volvo's technology is significantly enhancing yields (as much as 4%) while improving worker safety at the same time.

Why it's important: As we have seen with Otto's long-haul trucking in the U.S., and Yara's autonomous shipping vessel in Norway, robotics and autonomous systems are already being applied in sectors that fall outside of taxis and ridesharing. Look for continued disruption in all areas that require some form of transportation, and for significant cross-pollination between them. Share on Facebook.

Sensor Detects Shooting at Elephants, Helps Authorities Catch Poachers

solar powerWhat it is: Vanderbilt University and Colorado State University recently developed a new system called WIPER that uses ballistic shockwave sensors embedded in tracking collars to help save endangered African elephants. The system sends coordinates to authorities immediately after the sensors detect gunshots. Vanderbilt is the first to use shockwave detection technology in the push to help save elephants from poachers. Although elephant poachers attempt to minimize the sounds their weapons produce, high-powered gunshots produce an acoustic shockwave that poachers cannot supress and WIPER technology can detect. Vanderbilt plans on making WIPER an open-source feature for future wildlife tracking devices.

Why it's important: This article is a great example of how the ever-expanding mesh of networks and sensors provides us with high-bandwidth communications and immediate, near-perfect information. By making technology like WIPER freely available to other wildlife tracking manufacturers, we'll be able to stop poachers in their tracks for good -- and we may even find use cases for metropolitan law enforcement. Share on Facebook

Boeing Studies Pilotless Plans as it Ponders Next Jetliner

volta based tesla

What it is: In a briefing for the Paris Airshow, Boeing, the world's biggest plane maker, revealed their recent research on self-flying planes. Boeing believes that the basic builing blocks of the technology already exist, and that pilotless plans will soon be tested against the safety standards of air travel. Airlines are on board with Boeing dabbling in this technology, as it's projected the airline industry will need to add 1.5 million pilots over the next 20 years as travel demands around the world continue to rise. In addition, Boeing is developing a cross between its narrow-bodied 737 and wider 787 Dreamliner aircraft that will be available around 2025.

Why it's important: We are heading towards a future of massively transformative flying transportation. From Airbus' plan for autonomous flying cars by 2021 to Uber's "Elevate" network for alleviating congested roads to Boeing's self-flying planes, key players are well on their way to massively disrupting the transportation industry, transforming how we move around the planet. Share on Facebook

SoftBank to Buy Boston Dynamics From Alphabet

autonomous ship

What it is: As part of an effort to bolster its R&D capabilities, Softbank announced its intention to acquire robotics leaders Boston Dynamics and Schaft from Google. It's likely that the two companies may eventually be incorporated into Softbank's $93 billion Vision Fund, which invests in technologies with massive near-term impact such as AI and robotics.

Why it's important: Boston Dynamics will now have the backing of a fund and presence in Tokyo and Asia, where humanoid robotics are more culturally accepted. Will this environment enable Boston Dynamics to experiment and innovate at the scale and speed desired? Share on Facebook

Washington Governor Calls Self-Driving Car Tech 'Foolproof,' Allows Tests Without Drivers

UBI

What it is: Washington Governor Jay Inslee recently signed an executive order that allows autonomous car companies to apply for self-driving car pilot program tests on the state's public roads. In a blog post, the governor revealed details from an official order that stated around 94% of all auto accidents are caused by driver error, and he believes self-driving cars could greatly help reduce this percentage.

Why it's important: Today, about 32,000+ motor vehicle deaths occur per year in the U.S. alone, and auto accidents remain the leading cause of death for children younger than age 13. McKinsey predicts autonomous vehicles could reduce U.S. auto accidents by 90%. Which states will be willing to experiment with self-driving car technology, and which ones will stifle innovation through regulation? Share on Facebook

AI Detects Autism In Infants (Again)

UBI

What it is: Following previous research they conducted in February, a team at the UNC has created another application of machine learning that can detect autism in infants as young as 6 months old with a high degree of accuracy. In February, the team looked at structural changes in the brain, while the most recent algorithm looked at functional changes via a functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) to measure the activity of 26,335 brain connections across 230 regions. Notably, this study yielded no false positives, but did miss 2 out of 11 cases when tested on a set of 59 6-month-olds who later developed autism.

Why it's important: As the authors note, when research begins to combine advances in multiple brain scan data types with environmental factors and behavioral notes, early and highly accurate prediction is within reach. Look for similar advances in prevention and cures powered by applying machine learning to improved sensor data across many new streams of information. Share on Facebook

Fabrication Technology in the Fourth Dimension

UBI

What it is: Researchers at ETH Zurich have taken a major step forward in 3D and 4D printing by creating a construction principle that can produce load-bearing and predictable structures. By adding actuators that place the objects in either a retracted or extended position, the team can use software to predict and simulate what an object will do or perform.

Why it's important: Printing 3D objects in one dimension brings massive efficiencies not only for the speed of manufacturing, but also for delivery and storage. As researchers experiment with new materials, look for medical use cases like stents and construction solutions like ventilation systems to emerge. Share on Facebook

Fwd: Steve: 5 take aways from our 300+ person family office gathering this week

Hi Steve - On Monday, we got a chance to do something that most emerging managers never get to do: ask family offices and other LPs exactly what they look for in an investment. For those of you who didn't make it to the event, here are some key takeaways (and be sure to RSVP for our next events):

1 - Lead with the Sizzle: Ira Perlmuter, who manages investments for the family that owns the Mall of America, suggested that managers should "lead with the sizzle." By sizzle, Ira meant that managers shouldn't be afraid to start the conversation with what makes their offering unique. Family offices have so many people vying for their attention that you need to stand out with a compelling value proposition right away or you probably won't make it past the initial screening.

2 - The majority of the investors on stage were family offices but we also had some other allocators giving their perspective. The one thing that almost every investor had in common, from a fund of hedge funds to a single family office, was that they all see hundreds of investment ideas for every one that they actually allocate to. On one panel in the morning, one investor said that they look at about 1,000 investments, engage with maybe 500 or so of those, take a serious look at about 100 from there and of the few dozen they meet with, they end up investing in maybe 2 but usually 1 fund. If you're raising capital for a fund or looking to get your company funded, that probably seems like long odds. If you're targeting one investor, it is, but the successful managers have systems in place to engage with hundreds of LPs so that they aren't only relying on one swamped investor to pick them out of the 1,000+ other opportunities.

3 - If you are an emerging manager you have to keep open to creative ways of getting out of the seeding stage. Some ideas floated by speakers and managers alike included discounting fees for share classes, JVing with a multi-family office, or allowing Co-GP investment layers into your strategy. Similar to takeaway #2, you have to realize how many options LPs have when it comes to allocating their capital and if you are coming to a meeting with less track record, less AUM, and less pedigree there has to be something in it for the investor to compensate for that.

4 - Impact investing is appealing to family offices, but they're skeptical. One family office spoke at length about sustainability and impact investing, which served as a reminder that family offices (and the families that they represent) are increasingly looking for a "triple bottom line" or some measurement of positive impact when it comes to their investments. If you've been to any of our family office events, you've probably spoken to at least a couple family offices that are looking to incorporate impact investing in their overall mandate.

The trouble, however, as one private equity exec mentioned in the post-event cocktail hour is that there are so many GPs trying to pass off traditional investments as impact investments because they know LPs see it as important. That's made some investors more skeptical about whether it's truly an "impact investment" or not. Even in the cases where a manager or a company is presenting a true impact investment, there is some resistance among investors who see achieving a social impact as a low priority compared to their duty to generate high returns. I'm sure we'll cover impact investing in more detail as this trend continues and feature ever more investors talking about how they're incorporating social impact into their investments.

5 - Reference point is key. A big reason that we developed the Family Office Club community was to give family offices opportunities to meet other family offices and exchange notes, discuss co-investments, and learn from one another. After ten years, the family office community is more developed than ever and family offices rely on each other increasingly to validate investment strategies and confirm that a counterparty is credible. Anyone who has worked on Wall Street knows how important reputation is when you are looking to make a trade or establish a relationship. The same is true for family offices. So, building relationships with family offices, being a source of value, and establishing your industry reputation are all critical activities for you if you want to work with family offices.

I hope you enjoyed this recap and if you want to stay connected in the family office community, join the Club: http://FamilyOffices.com/Association
